Straight African-American Man Who Supports Civil Rights for LGBTQ People

Fem.men.ist Blog - A Must Read.

Here is the description for the awesome Fem-men-ist Blog I discovered recently:

Collaborative brainstorming and revolutionary heartstorming towards conscious community. Race, gender, sexuality & masculinity politics, news, events, resources, personal perspectives & good conversations too.

I thank the blog’s owner, Richard, for posting his report, “Perspective from str8 Black Male Protest Organizer in Oakland” on the Join the Impact discussion forum because that is how I learned about his wonderful blog.

See that post for a great discussion on the importance of white queers recognizing the fact that we have absorbed racial (and other) stereotypes and prejudices, many of which lurk in the subconscious realm of our psyche yet nonetheless influence our perception, judgment, and behavior.

Blasts hit Bangkok as protests continue

Filed under: Uncategorized — leftcoastgooner @ 8:41 am

BANGKOK, Thailand (CNN) — A pair of explosions injured dozens of people in Bangkok early Sunday, as protests against the Thai government continued.

Anti-government protesters cheer at Suvarnabhumi airport, Bangkok.

Thai riot police move into Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

At midnight, 49 people were injured — three of them seriously — when what was believed to be a grenade was launched at protesters at the Thai government house, said Dr. Petchpong Kumjornkijjakarn, director of Eruwan Rescue Center.

The government house has been under the control of the protesters for the past three months.

Later, police said there was another blast in a road in front of Don Mueang Airport, the smaller of two airports also being occupied by protesters from the People’s Alliance for Democracy, which has vowed not to leave the buildings until the current government administration resigns.

Police said it was unclear what caused the 4 a.m. blast and that two passers-by suffered minor injuries.

On Saturday, protesters occupying Bangkok’s international airport forced police to retreat after the officers had tried to stop more demonstrators from joining the thousands already there.

Don’t Miss

The roughly 100 officers left behind nine police vans. The protesters promptly let the air out of their tires. Police had hoped to prevent people from bringing acheter cialis food and water to the 5,000 or so protesters inside after seizing the airport on Tuesday, shutting down traffic in and out of it.

The anti-government alliance accuses the current administration — led by the People Power Party (PPP) — of being a proxy government for one-time Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Thaksin was ousted in a bloodless coup in 2006, but he returned to Thailand after the PPP swept into power in December 2007.

Then, in August, he fled again just as he was to appear in a corruption case against him.

The anti-government protesters want Thaksin extradited and tried on those charges.

It also accuses the PPP government of wanting to amend the constitution so Thaksin does not have to face charges.

European stem cell patent fails, again

epo.bmp

posted for asher mullard

A European agency has rejected an appeal for a patent on developing human embryonic stem cells.

The proposed patent, submitted by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, sought to protect a method used to culture embryonic stem cells, developed by stem cell pioneer James Thomson.

“Decisive in the [appeal board] ruling was the application’s claim regarding human stem cell cultures,” says a statement from the European Patent Office. “The [board] decided that under the European Patent Convention it is not possible to grant a patent for an invention which necessarily involves the use and destruction of human embryos.”

The EPO also notes that the convention “does not allow patenting inventions whose commercial exploitation would be contrary to public order or morality”.

While Reuters claims that the decision not to overturn an earlier ruling “could keep some companies from jumping into the sector and steer investors to put their money elsewhere” not everybody agrees.

Robin Lovell-Badge, head of stem cell research at National Institute for Medical Research, UK, told the Guardian that this ruling will make it easier for biotechnology companies to operate in Europe than in the United States, where similar patents have been granted. “I can imagine there will be sighs of relief,” he says.

Ig

The Guardian also notes that many companies are filing stem cell patents on a country-by-country basis, rather than going through the EPO.

Travis Barker sues plane maker - and more - for crash

TravisbarkerFormer Blink 182 band member Travis Barker is suing the maker of the plane, the aviation company that rented him the plane and the maker of the tires — Bombardier Inc., Clay Lacy Aviation and Goodyear Tire and Rubber — in connection with the Sept. 19 crash that injured him and killed two of his friends.

According to TMZ, the suit, filed in L.A. County Superior Court today, was filed by Barker and the mother of Travis’ bodyguard, Charles “Che” Still, who died in the crash.

In the lawsuit, Travis and Thelma Martin Still claim “one or more of the tires failed” causing the Learjet to crash.

The suit also alleges a negligent attempt to abort takeoff, adding that the pilot’s decision was a breach of their duty owed to the passengers onboard and a factor in causing the crash.

The suit also alleges the plane was “defective,” as were component parts.

The suit goes on to say that the landing gear, tires, wheels, brakes, reverse thrust system, squat switches and component parts were “not airworthy.”

Barker is claiming the crash caused him “pain and suffering, mental anguish, psychological and emotional distress, disfigurement and pre-impact fear of death and burning.”

Its always sunny in philadelphia episodes

No kidding! You go, Travis. We hope he wins big time!
